Part of the municipality of Carboneras lies inside the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, which is shared between Almería, Carboneras and Níjar. As well as the municipal plan, the park's PORN and PRUG (its natural resources plan and use and management plan, Decreto 37/2008) apply there and divide the land into zones with different uses.
